I have a TD Janorikar recording with him singing Savani Kalyan. However
this recording has a major kalyan ang and does not sound like Savani at
all. Also Jha Saheb's discourse on Savani in his book matches with
Mallikarjun, Mogubai and Vilayat Hussain's recordings.

However, Jha Saheb has mentioned "Bihag ang" in brackets when he explains
Savani. So may be there is another raag, not from the bihag ang, also
known as Savani/Savani Kalyan which TDJ is singing? Does someone know
about this raag?

I found this in Patrick Moutal's "Comparative study of selected
hindustani raags" p. 81/82

"three different formulas:
1. Suddha Kalyan and Nata (mentionned by R. Vaze but unexplained and
probably obsolete (could this have developped into Savani Nat? HB)

2. Sudh Kalyan and Bihag, chalan: PMG RS GMGM P GM GR S / N'D'P'
P'N'S' etc.

3. Sudh Kalyan and the occasional SMGM and nyasa on D'. This type has
been given by V.N. Bhatkhande (and adopted by B. Subha Rao). Its vadi
is S. The raga moves mainly in Mandra and Madhya Stana with a Nyasa on
D' and is to be performed during the first Paraha of the night.
In this type the Bihag element is reduced to the maximum with only an
occasional SMGP which is indicative of Bihag. Therefore the importance
of M is very little and one has to play Sudh Kalyan without m and with
D' nyasa:
SRS N'D'N'D'P', P'S, RGRS SSMG, PPD, PDPG, RSD', GRS. "

I have to listen to check who sings what but I'm quite sure I have
heard both the second and third. I'll add a posting if something comes
up.
